My Life

What makes this particular genre you are involved in so special?

This genre is so special to me because I’ve been a believer for most of my life. I’ve had a close relationship with God and I chose to share some personal intimate details about my life to inspire others who are going through rough, difficult times. Not only is God real, He will help you through the rough times.

How hard was it to sit down and actually start writing something?

For me it was pretty easy to write. I remember my childhood and the struggles that I went through pretty well. Writing about them helped me to see how far I have progressed in my life.

What, according to you, is the hardest thing about writing?

The hardest thing about writing for me is when I had to revisit the bad times. Writing about them brings them back to life, as if they happened just yesterday. I am very detailed in describing those bad events in my book because I remember them so vividly.

What would you say is the easiest aspect of writing?

The easiest aspect of writing is sharing your thoughts and telling your story. It doesn’t matter if your book is nonfiction or fiction. The author has the ability to take the readers into their world as they share and describe their story.

Do you proofread and edit your work on your own or pay someone to do it for you?

I did my own proof-reading and editing when I wrote my book. Language Arts was one of my favorite subjects in school and I’m glad that I paid attention in class! I am very picky about my work being done right and the time and effort I put in was well worth it. In the end you get the book just the way you want it and it saves you money as well.

What is your take on the importance of a good cover and title?

A good cover and title is very important! This is what will grab the readers curiosity. They will wonder what the book is about and this will grab their attention. A catchy book cover can say a thousand words in my opinion.

How realistic is your book?

My book is nonfiction. There are no stories that are fabricated in it. It is a very detailed description of the things that happened in my life. Things are not sugar coated as well. I tell things exactly as they are and how they happened.

Have you ever designed your own book cover?

Yes. My book cover is exactly how I described it to my publisher. Each image on the cover represents a very important part of my life that is represented in the book.

Did any of your books get rejected by publishers?

Yes! I originally submitted my manuscript to Westbow Press. After reviewing it, they wanted me to edit too much of my story including some very important details that I wanted to be known to my readers. I decided to go elsewhere.

Have you ever marketed your own books yourself?

Yes I have. I advertise my book on Facebook. My most effective strategy is talking about my book to people in person. They always want to learn more about it. I always keep a couple of copies on me. I plan to be out in public when it warms up here to market my book even more.

Another misconception is that all writers are independently wealthy, how true is that?

Haha. I enjoyed this question. This is definitely not true. There are some well known authors out there who can publish with the most expensive publishers. I had to save up and use my tax return to buy the publishing package that I wanted which included a custom book cover , a personal author’s assistant, an author’s website and post publishing marketing.

They say books die every time they are turned into a movie; what do you think?

I don’t think this true. Sometimes movies change the details of the story in the book which causes the viewers to get off course. The movie should highlight the details in the book to bring them to life. When done correctly, the movie should increase the sales of a book.

What is the secret to becoming a bestselling author?

I think the secret to becoming a best selling author is to have a unique story that grabs the reader’s attention. The book has to be written very well and be trending in social media. I feel that the proper book promoting has to be present as well. Sometimes all it takes is for one door to open for this to happen!

How did it feel when your first book got published?

It felt amazing. I felt like I had won $1,000,000. It took me 5 years to write my book. It was definitely not easy. There were days where I had to be super motivated to write. That day when it was finally published was a day of triumph for me!

What is your motivation for writing more?

People who read my book want to know more about my story. They want to know how I am doing today along with my family. This could be a opportunity for me to write book number two.

How did you celebrate the publishing of your first book?

I told everyone I knew and posted it on Facebook. My Facebook page blew up. My friends were intrigued that I was now a published author. My family had a lot of questions and were very excited to read the book!

Do you believe you have done enough to leave a legacy behind?

Yes I do. My book deals with very unique situations that most people would not have gone through. It was the most difficult time of my life. There were times where I thought I was not gonna make it. It took extreme patience and diligence to overcome in the end. My faith in God really helped me to make it through. I felt like God allowed it to come my way for a purpose.

Although all books say that all the characters in the book aren’t real or related, but are they really all fictional and made up?

My book is unique because most of the characters in the book are real people that I actually knew. I had to get authorization forms signed by these people to use their names in my book. This became frustrating because some of the people didn’t understand the importance of getting the form back to me in a timely manner. Tracking down my old attorney and him agreeing to sign the form was huge because he played a major part in my story.

Are you working on something new at the moment?

No. I am currently not working on anything at the moment. I want my current book to gain popularity and to win some awards to get my name out there. I wanna do radio and television interviews and answer any questions that people might have. I really enjoy writing, especially to help and inspire others so I have a feeling that I am not done yet!

Fiction or non-fiction? Which is easier?

In my case non-fiction was easier. Since my book is about my personal life it was easy to write about for the most part. I had to think back on some details that happened in my life but once I got to writing about them it was easy to remember all of the details. When people read my book they might think its fiction but it is 100% nonfiction!
